About the author

Richard Butler was born in Rainham, Essex and attended his first football match at local club Dagenham in 1980.

But it was Arsenal who won his heart, due to his mother being born a stone's throw from the old Highbury Stadium.
He became fascinated by the media coverage of football thanks to his father's career at Associated Newspapers and he wrote his first match report in 1979.
After earlier careers in sales, insurance and as a driving instructor, Richard moved up North in 2001 and began writing about local football for the Darlington & Stockton Times.
Since then his journalistic career has really taken off. After studying the NCTJ Sports Journalism Diploma, Richard has written for The Football League Paper, The Northern Echo and The Lancashire Times, as well as working for the media departments of Dagenham & Redbridge FC, Accrington Stanley FC and Northallerton Town FC.
Richard recently set up Butler Sports TV, giving professional media coverage to local grass roots sports clubs, and Butler Sports Media, a company which manages the social media and websites of sports clubs.

He is also writing his first book.
